In mid-May 2026 President Trump said publicly that he had not approved a further arms package for Taiwan, reported at around $14bn, that the decision "depends on China", and that it was a good negotiating chip. President Lai Ching-te responded that arms purchases from the United States are the most important deterrent of regional conflict. A February 2026 executive order had reoriented US arms-transfer policy around allied defence spending and strategic geography, and a Trump–Xi call on 4 February was followed by Beijing urging Washington to handle Taiwan arms sales with "prudence".
Why it mattersDeterrence is a belief held by the other side, and its cheapest component is credibility. Publicly linking Taiwan arms transfers to a broader negotiation with Beijing is consequential independently of what is ultimately delivered. But this statement is not evidence of a general slowdown and should not be read as one: it concerns a PROSPECTIVE package, and five months earlier the same administration notified Congress of the largest package ever approved for Taiwan. Through the same period deliveries continued and the notified-but-undelivered backlog fell. Notification, approval and delivery are separate states moving on separate clocks, and this record covers only the first.
