Broad area of activity
Northern Israel, the Golan Heights and — since December 2024 — the buffer zone and positions beyond it inside Syria, described at strategic scale only
Notable history
The Northern Command holds the IDF's two northern fronts, and its Syrian one changed character in December 2024: as Damascus fell, Israeli forces entered the 1974 disengagement buffer zone on the Golan and positions beyond it, the air force destroyed most of Syria's strategic weapons and air defences in days, and the command has since conducted recurring operations in the south — the Quneitra incursion of February 2026 among them — alongside the security negotiation with Damascus that opened in January 2026. Israel invokes the protection of the Druze as a stated justification for its southern posture, struck Damascus during the July 2025 Sweida violence, and is the state to which Sweida's spiritual leader publicly relocated his community's horizon in August 2026. The 210th Division, the Golan's territorial division, is the command's formation on this front and is authored below.
Strengths
Air superiority over Syria that no Syrian force contests, a standing regional command, and the negotiating position that military facts on the ground provide.
Limitations
A posture Damascus, Türkiye and much of the region read as occupation, a Druze file in which Sweida's own factions are not united, and an open-ended presence whose end state the negotiation has not defined. No dispositions, strength or operational detail are published.

Key events
Israel–Syria security negotiations
US-mediated talks in Paris and other venues near a security agreement: reported terms include phased Israeli withdrawal toward the 1974 disengagement lines with positions retained on the Syrian Hermon, a southern demilitarised arrangement, and Syrian commitments against Iranian-linked presence. The deal is repeatedly described as near-complete — and remains unsigned, with Israeli incursions and strikes continuing in parallel, including a February incursion in Quneitra and June operations in Daraa province.
