Notable history
Iran separated air defence from the air force in 2008 and gave it its own service, an unusual arrangement that only a handful of states use and one that reflects how central the problem is to Iranian defence thinking. The Khatam al-Anbiya air-defence headquarters sits above the service and is described as coordinating the air-defence assets of both the Artesh and the Revolutionary Guard — the single documented instance of genuine joint operation between Iran's two militaries. Abdolrahim Mousavi commanded it from 2019 before becoming chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, which is part of why he was regarded as the Iranian officer with the most joint experience of his generation.
Strengths
A dedicated service rather than an air-force subordinate function, a national command that spans both militaries, and long institutional focus on a threat Iran has expected for decades.
Limitations
The 2025 and 2026 wars were both opened by opponents operating in Iranian airspace, and US officials claimed air superiority over large parts of the country by March 2026 — a claim this module records as made rather than established. Iran does not publish its air-defence architecture, external assessments of it differ widely, and this record contains no sites, no coverage, no interceptor holdings, no readiness and no assessment of where defence is thin. That class of content is excluded by design, not omitted for want of sources.

Air defence is the documented exception to Iran's institutional separation: the Khatam al-Anbiya air-defence headquarters is described as coordinating the air-defence assets of both the Artesh and the Revolutionary Guard, and analysts note that outside this function there has been very little interoperability between the two forces. Whether the headquarters is best understood as an Artesh service command or as a joint body above both is described differently by different sources, and this module does not resolve it.
