- Iran separated air defence from the air force in 2008 and gave it its own service, an unusual arrangement that only a handful of states use and one that reflects how central the problem is to Iranian defence thinking. The Khatam al-Anbiya air-defence headquarters sits above the service and is described as coordinating the air-defence assets of both the Artesh and the Revolutionary Guard — the single documented instance of genuine joint operation between Iran's two militaries. Abdolrahim Mousavi commanded it from 2019 before becoming chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, which is part of why he was regarded as the Iranian officer with the most joint experience of his generation.
