Broad area of activity
The Indo-Pacific region
Notable history
The oldest and largest of the US combatant commands, responsible for forces and alliance relationships across the Indo-Pacific. Its relevance here is not any capability in Taiwan — there is none — but the credibility of American presence in the wider region, expressed through alliances with Japan, the Philippines, Australia and South Korea and through access arrangements. The 2026 defence strategy's emphasis on the first island chain and denial concepts is the framework regional partners read.
Strengths
A mature alliance network, substantial forward presence hosted by allies, and long-established interoperability with regional forces.
Limitations
Distance is the structural problem: the theatre is far from the continental United States and close to China. Political direction is currently a variable in its own right, with arms-transfer policy toward Taiwan visibly in flux during 2026. This record publishes no basing, force levels, posture or deployment information of any kind.
