- Notable history
- Established in 1954 under constitutional constraints that shaped their structure and doctrine for decades. Successive policy revisions since 2015 have expanded the legal scope for collective self-defence, and Japan has committed to a substantial increase in defence spending. Attention has shifted markedly toward the southwest islands, the geography that places Japan inside any Taiwan contingency — and statements in late 2025 about the circumstances permitting a Japanese response made that linkage more explicit than at any previous point.
