Notable history

Japan publishes quarterly figures for scrambles against foreign aircraft, broken out by the country whose aircraft prompted them and by the sector they occurred in, and the southwestern sector has accounted for the large majority for over a decade. That reporting makes the JASDF the second independent public counter of PLA air activity in this region alongside Taiwan's defence ministry — two governments, two methodologies, and a partial overlap in what they observe. The service is also mid-way through a substantial recapitalisation, including a fifth-generation fleet and standoff weapons acquired under the counterstrike policy adopted in 2022.

Strengths

Modern aircraft, a mature integrated air-defence and early-warning system, and long interoperability with US air forces in the same airspace.

Limitations

Sustained scramble activity imposes the same maintenance and crew-fatigue costs on Japan that it does on Taiwan, at a tempo set by someone else. Recruitment shortfalls apply here as across the SDF. Scramble counts are Japanese detections published by Japan, not independent measurements, and this module reads them on those terms. No basing, aircraft numbers, posture or readiness are published.
