Japan announces medium-range air-defence missiles for Yonaguni by fiscal 2030

24 Feb 2026 Yonaguni

What happened

Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters in Tokyo that Type-03 medium-range surface-to-air guided missiles, with improvements against hypersonic glide vehicles, are to be deployed at Camp Yonaguni during fiscal 2030, subject to the progress of facility construction, with a unit of roughly one hundred personnel. Yonaguni is Japan's westernmost inhabited island, about 110 kilometres from Taiwan; the deployment extends the southwest-island build-up begun in 2016 to the island closest to the strait. Beijing had condemned Japan's November 2025 statement on the possible use of force in a Taiwan contingency and answered the Yonaguni plan as a deliberate move that creates regional tension.

The announcement is the first dated, funded step that places a Japanese air-defence unit on the island nearest Taiwan, which is the difference between a contingency discussed in Tokyo and one prepared in geography. What it establishes is a plan with a fiscal year attached and a stated dependence on construction; what it does not establish is any change in what is stationed on the island today, which Japan states when it happens and which Vigil does not infer. The observable is the timetable holding — construction contracted, the unit named, the fiscal year kept — or slipping, and the PRC's response moving from statement to act.
