Notable history

Built during the Cold War around anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasures for the defence of sea lines to Japan, and in consequence the regional navy with the deepest specialisation in exactly the mission the first island chain generates. Its surveillance of the channels through the Ryukyus is what produces Japan's public reporting of PLA naval transits, and that reporting is one of the module's few independent checks on activity Taiwan also reports. The service has since added helicopter-carrying destroyers being converted for fixed-wing operation and an expanding submarine force, both of which are a substantial change in what a constitutionally constrained navy holds.

Strengths

Anti-submarine and mine-countermeasures capability with few peers, deep interoperability with the US Navy, and a surveillance system that generates a public record of what moves through the channels.

Limitations

Hull numbers are modest against the scale of the PLA Navy's expansion, and crewing is a documented constraint. Legal authority for anything beyond the defence of Japan depends on a political characterisation of the situation. Vigil publishes no basing, ship numbers, dispositions or readiness.
