Notable history

One of INDOPACOM's five service component commands, and the one whose parent service made the most visible doctrinal change of the last decade specifically because of this theatre. The Marine Corps divested armour and much of its towed artillery to build small, dispersed formations equipped with anti-ship missiles and sensors, intended to operate inside contested island terrain rather than assault it — a denial concept rather than an expeditionary one. Whatever its merits, it is the clearest case in the module of an outside military reorganising around the geography of the first island chain, and it converges conceptually with what Taiwan's own asymmetric school argues for.

Strengths

A force design built for the specific geography, and access arrangements with Japan and the Philippines that put that design near the terrain it was designed for.

Limitations

The concept is contested within the US defence debate itself and has not been tested; small dispersed formations depend on sustainment and communications that are the first things a capable opponent would contest. Nothing here should be read as a commitment: the existence of a force design suited to a contingency is not evidence that the contingency would be entered.
