Notable history
In the weeks after the July 2025 violence, on 23 August 2025, some thirty to forty of Sweida's Druze factions announced a National Guard under the leadership of Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the most influential of the community's spiritual authorities, with the stated aim of consolidating the province's military and security effort — the Men of Dignity among them, and reportedly the Sweida Military Council. It is the body that holds most of the province outside state authority, that Israel's stated protection interest attaches to, and that fought the Interior Ministry's forces in the western countryside again on 31 August 2026, three days after al-Hijri described the community as an integral part of the State of Israel in remarks other Druze figures rejected. Its membership has shifted: by August 2026 sources differed on whether the Men of Dignity were still inside it.
Strengths

Limitations
A consolidation whose members have left and rejoined within a year, a leadership whose political horizon has moved outside the Syrian state, and a standing confrontation with a government that regards the province as an internal matter. The southern file moves the other way — a leader looks outward, and the line shoots
In remarks to a gathering in Sweida, reported on 28 August 2026, Sheikh al-Aql Hikmat al-Hijri — the most influential religious authority among Syria's Druze — described the community as "an integral part of the State of Israel", praised the Israeli state model and asserted doctrinal common ground. Other Druze figures, including in the Golan, publicly rejected the characterisation, and it does not represent all Syrian Druze. On the evening of Monday 31 August fighting resumed in the western Sweida countryside between Interior Ministry Internal Security Forces and the National Guard, an armed formation aligned with al-Hijri. Accounts of the outcome differ: Syrian state media reported ten government security personnel wounded, while other regional reporting recorded one man killed and eleven wounded including a child, and attributed the opening of fire to a National Guard position shelling two villages. Reporting also records two civilians killed in earlier clashes west of Sweida city. Calm was reported to have returned within days. The September 2025 Sweida roadmap remains unimplemented and no negotiating track between Damascus and al-Hijri has been confirmed by either side.
