Notable history
The Third Army became the land component of Central Command in the 1980s and has run the theatre's ground posture ever since, from Desert Storm through Iraq and Afghanistan to the present. Its forward headquarters at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait is the physical form of the Kuwaiti basing relationship, and its subordinate air and missile defence command is the organisation through which Army Patriot and THAAD batteries — the units that defend American forces and stand alongside Gulf air defences — are deployed. That is the mechanism that puts the command in this atlas. The roughly fifty thousand American personnel deployed in and around the Middle East in March 2026 include the land component's, and this module records neither how many nor where.
Strengths
A standing theatre headquarters with forty years of regional continuity, the Army's missile-defence enterprise in the theatre, and basing relationships with every Gulf host.
Limitations
A land component in a war fought from the air and the sea, whose most relevant function is the defensive one it shares with the hosts.
