In brief

The federation's elite formation — a combined-arms guard command built with foreign advisers from 2011 that carried the sharp end of the Emirati Yemen campaign, and the Gulf's clearest example of a small state investing in a deployable professional force rather than in mass.

Notable history

The Presidential Guard was created in 2011 by consolidating the federation's guard, marine and special-operations units into one command, developed with foreign advisers into a professional expeditionary formation, and used as such: its units led the Emirati operation that took Aden in 2015 and the fighting along Yemen's Red Sea coast afterwards. It is the Emirati answer to a problem every small Gulf state has — how to field a force that can actually be sent somewhere — and it is the reason the Emirates' military reputation is out of proportion to its population. In the current war no expeditionary operation has been reported, and this record makes no claim that one occurred.

Strengths

A professional, combat-experienced formation with its own aviation and marine elements, under a single command that can be committed quickly.

Limitations

Small, and built for expeditionary tasks in a war in which the federation's problem is being reached rather than reaching. Its structure below command level is not published and nothing here describes it, its strength, its basing or its readiness.
