In brief

The federation's navy — a corvette-and-patrol force on two coasts, the Gulf and Fujairah's Gulf of Oman shore, which together are the maritime shape of the Emirati bypass: a state that exports from both sides of the strait it cannot control.

Broad area of activity

The Emirati Gulf coast and the Fujairah coast on the Gulf of Oman

Notable history

The Emirati navy is small and modern: French-built corvettes, fast attack craft and patrol vessels, with a naval base structure on both the Gulf coast and the east coast at Fujairah. That second coast is the point. The Habshan–Fujairah pipeline carries Abu Dhabi's crude to a terminal outside the strait, and the navy's east-coast presence is the maritime counterpart of the bypass — the reason the Emirates could keep exporting when the strait closed in 2026. Fujairah was struck in the early March attacks on Gulf energy targets. The navy has also been the Gulf's most active participant in multinational maritime operations, from counter-piracy off Somalia to the coalition structures based in Bahrain, though it withdrew from Combined Maritime Forces' task-force structure in 2023. Nothing this module has read establishes what the navy did in the current war.

Strengths

Two coasts, one of them outside the strait; modern corvettes; and a record of multinational operations that gives it more coalition experience than its size suggests.

Limitations

A force of corvettes and patrol craft against an opponent whose methods — fast craft, mines, shore missiles, drones — are exactly what small surface combatants find hardest, on a coast within reach of a very large number of Iranian systems. No hulls, bases by detail, dispositions or operations are recorded.

Related locations

Fujairah: The Gulf of Oman outlet that lets Emirati crude bypass the strait sits on the navy's eastern coast; the association is geographic and records no escort or protective role.
