Notable history

A decade ago the Qatari air force flew a dozen Mirages; it now flies French Rafales, European Typhoons and American F-15QAs, ordered in the years after the 2017 blockade from three different suppliers on purpose, so that no single ally could ground it. It also owns the state's Patriot batteries, which makes it the organisation responsible for defending the liquefaction trains at Ras Laffan — the most structurally exposed energy asset in the Gulf, across a shared gas field from the Iranian coast. Ras Laffan was struck in early March 2026 and trains were damaged in April; what this service engaged, and with what result, is not established.

Strengths

New aircraft from three suppliers, a modern missile-defence tier, and the co-location with the American air component at Al Udeid that gives it integration other Gulf air forces lack.

Limitations

More aircraft types than a small service can easily sustain, a pilot base that has struggled to keep pace with procurement, and an asset to defend whose exposure no air defence can remove. No bases, numbers, engagement records or readiness are recorded.

Related locations

Ras Laffan: The complex the service's ground-based defences exist to protect; the association records responsibility, not sites, coverage or performance.
