In brief
The exclave's own army — raised from the 5th Army Corps in December 2013 as a separate combined-arms army because Nakhchivan is cut off from the rest of Azerbaijan by Armenian territory, the force that exercises with Turkish units across the exclave's short border with Türkiye, and the garrison on the other side of the transit question.

Broad area of activity
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic — bordered by Armenia, Iran and, for a few kilometres, Türkiye
Notable history
Nakhchivan has no land connection to the rest of Azerbaijan, which is why its garrison was made an army: the 5th Army Corps was reorganised as a separate combined-arms army by presidential decree on 18 December 2013, with its own command able to fight without reinforcement from the mainland. Its border with Armenia is the northern frontier of Vayots Dzor and the western frontier of Syunik, and the exclave's short border with Türkiye — the only one Azerbaijan has — is the ground on which Turkish and Azerbaijani forces have exercised together under the Shusha Declaration. The transit route between Nakhchivan and the mainland through Armenian territory, the subject of the 2025 Washington framework and its 2026 implementation, would end the isolation that this formation exists to answer.
Strengths
Self-sufficiency by design, the Turkish frontier and partnership behind it, and terrain that favours the defender on every side.
Limitations
Isolation is the whole problem: the exclave depends on air and Iranian road links for everything the mainland cannot send. No strength, holdings, positions or readiness are published.
