Broad area of activity
Syunik province, from Goris — the southern frontier with Azerbaijan and the corridor to Iran
Notable history
The 1st Corps holds the sector that the post-2020 settlement turned into Armenia's most sensitive: Syunik, the narrow southern province between Azerbaijan proper and its Nakhchivan exclave, carrying the road to Iran that is Armenia's only non-Georgian outlet and the line along which any transit arrangement to Nakhchivan would run. Before 2020 the corps faced a frontier shielded by the Karabakh Armenian forces; since the 2020 war and the 2023 exodus it faces Azerbaijani positions directly along an undelimited border, with the 2021 and 2022 incursions in its area. It is described in compiled references as a small corps of two motor-rifle regiments with tank and reconnaissance battalions; that composition is what the transformation concept is replacing, and it is not adopted here.
Strengths
A sector of mountain terrain that favours a defender, and an international presence — the EU mission's observers — on its frontier since 2023.
Limitations
The sector's exposure is the module's central Armenian problem: a province narrow enough to be cut, an undelimited frontier, and the corridor question hanging over it. No strength, holdings, positions or readiness are published.
