Caspian energy exports, the Middle Corridor and Armenia's external access all cross Georgia. That concentration gives one state's stability an outsized regional weight, and Georgian political turbulence since 2024 introduced a variable the corridors' users had not previously had to consider.

Georgia carries three systems that have nothing to do with each other. Azerbaijani oil and gas move west through it to Türkiye and Europe, on routes built specifically to avoid Russia and Iran. The Middle Corridor's South Caucasus segment crosses it, along with the Black Sea ports at Poti and Batumi. And the large majority of Armenian trade, including everything moving north, passes through it. No alternative exists for any of the three that does not cross Russia or Iran.

The concentration has been tested once, in August 2008, when war interrupted energy flows and the Armenian northern route simultaneously — the empirical demonstration that these are one risk rather than three. Since 2024 a different kind of disruption has been present: sustained domestic political crisis, a contested election, a stalled EU accession track and a rupture with parts of Georgia's European partners. Nothing has interrupted transit, and the character of the risk has changed from military to political.

Different parties are exposed differently to the same concentration. Azerbaijan's westward export revenue has no alternative route consistent with its policy. Armenia's imports and exports have no alternative at all except a sanctions-constrained Iranian road. European buyers face a politically significant rather than quantitatively critical gas volume. Middle Corridor users face a route whose attraction depends on the northern alternative remaining unattractive. Georgia itself is exposed to the loss of transit revenue and, more consequentially, of the strategic attention that the corridors buy it.

The plausible significance is that the region's economic architecture rests on a single state's stability, and that the nature of the risk to it has changed without being repriced. For fifteen years the identified risk to these corridors was a repeat of 2008 — a military interruption. Since 2024 the live variable has been Georgian domestic politics and its consequences for European engagement, which no corridor investment case was built around. Vigil grades this plausible rather than documented: transit has not been interrupted, no operator has publicly repriced the route, and whether political turbulence in a transit state affects transit at all is precisely what has not been tested here.

- No operator has publicly repriced Georgian transit risk since 2024, so the final step rests on structural reasoning rather than on observed commercial behaviour — which is why it is graded plausible.
- Transit volumes are published by several national authorities on differing bases and are not directly comparable.
- Commercial terms of transit agreements are confidential.
- Armenian informal cross-border trade is unmeasured and would partly offset any formal disruption by an unknown amount.
- The absence of any transit effect from Georgia's political crisis can be read as evidence that commercial routing is insensitive to domestic politics absent actual disruption, or as evidence that the risk has not yet been tested. The two imply very different exposure and no data separates them.
- The concentration itself can be read as a vulnerability or as a source of Georgian stability — several powerful states have an interest in the transit state remaining functional, which is a stabilising incentive as well as a dependency. Both readings are held.

The corridors' principal single-state dependency and the variable that changed in 2024. Its resolution matters more to regional transit than any infrastructure decision.

Accession-track status and investment commitments are the observable measure of whether political risk is being priced.
The party with least redundancy. Movement toward Iran or, hypothetically, a reopened border would reduce the concentration this chain describes.
