- Iran is one of very few states that maintains two separate navies, and the division between them is the single most useful thing to understand about Iranian maritime power. The Artesh Navy is the conventional one: it operates the frigates, corvettes and submarines, it conducts the long-range deployments Iran uses for prestige, and its assigned area of emphasis lies outside the Gulf — the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is the service that looks like a navy in the ordinary sense, and for that reason it is also the more exposed one: US officials claimed in March 2026 to have destroyed much of Iran's regular naval surface fleet.
- Points forts
- Professional seamanship, a submarine arm, and reach beyond the Gulf that the Guard Navy's craft do not have. Its conventional character makes it the service through which Iran conducts naval diplomacy.
- Limites
- Conventional surface warships in a contested sea against a superior opponent are the most easily targeted naval assets Iran holds, and they are what US strike claims in March 2026 named. The Artesh Navy is not the force that would conduct the harassment and denial activity most associated with Hormuz, which is the Guard Navy's mission — a point often lost when reporting refers simply to "the Iranian navy". This record carries no vessels, no positions, no patrol areas and no operating pattern.
