- Iran is one of very few states that maintains two separate navies, and the division between them is the single most useful thing to understand about Iranian maritime power. The Artesh Navy is the conventional one: it operates the frigates, corvettes and submarines, it conducts the long-range deployments Iran uses for prestige, and its assigned area of emphasis lies outside the Gulf — the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is the service that looks like a navy in the ordinary sense, and for that reason it is also the more exposed one: US officials claimed in March 2026 to have destroyed much of Iran's regular naval surface fleet.
