In brief

- Broad area of activity
- The north-western Black Sea and the Odesa–Mykolaiv coast, historically; nothing about current basing is authored.
- Notable history
- A small arm reduced to one naval aviation brigade after the 2014 loss of Crimea took the Navy's main air station with it, and rebuilt around transport aircraft, Soviet-era helicopters and, from 2021, Bayraktar TB2 drones. Those drones gave the arm its one widely documented campaign: the spring 2022 fight for Snake Island, in which naval Bayraktars were credited with sinking landing craft and destroying air-defence and helicopter targets on the island, part of the pressure that forced the Russian withdrawal in June 2022. The arm has otherwise fought a quieter war of patrol, transport and evacuation, with helicopter losses recorded publicly early in the invasion.
- Strengths
- Early adoption of armed drones as a naval capability, which produced results out of proportion to the arm's size, and Western rotary-wing transfers that have begun to replace the Soviet fleet.
- Limitations
- One brigade, no fixed-wing combat aircraft, a helicopter fleet of uncertain serviceability, and airfields within reach of Russian strike since 2022. The maritime-drone campaign that defines Ukraine's sea war is run mainly by the intelligence services, not by this arm.
