In brief
A dedicated railway-engineering arm within the armed forces' material-technical support system — a Russian structural particularity that matters in a war supplied overwhelmingly by rail, and the builder of the 2024 line through occupied territory that bypasses the Crimean Bridge.

- Broad area of activity
- The rail network of European Russia and, since 2022, the occupied south and east of Ukraine, where the arm restores and builds line. No current disposition is authored.
- Notable history
- An arm with an 1851 founding date and a distinctly Russian survival: most militaries abandoned dedicated railway troops, Russia kept them as a separate arm under the material-technical support system and expanded their role after 2014. Their war has been the rail war behind the front — restoring interdicted lines, and above all the new line from Rostov-on-Don through occupied Donetsk oblast toward Crimea announced in March 2024, of which the roughly 60-kilometre section south of Donetsk was described by UK Defence Intelligence as among the largest infrastructure projects Russia has carried out in the occupied territories. Its purpose is structural: a supply route that does not depend on the Crimean Bridge.
- Strengths
- A standing engineering arm sized for the network Russia actually runs its army on, with the doctrine, rolling stock and manpower to build and repair line under wartime conditions — a capability the Ukrainian deep-strike campaign has repeatedly had to reckon with.
- Limitations
- What it builds is fixed and visible, and the occupied-territory line has been a declared Ukrainian target since it was announced; restoration capacity, not existence, is the analytically interesting quantity and the least documented one. Structure below the arm is not authored.

Sustainment
The supply and industrial records this force depends on, in the record's own words. A dependency, never a route, a capacity or a stock.
- Russian rear-area sustainment Logistics · Assessed by Vigil
The troops that operate and repair the rail system the sustainment record describes as the army's logistic spine; the record states the dependence on rail, not on this organisation by name.
