Identity provenance

Service ensign: St Andrew's ensign — naval ensign of the Russian Federation — carried by Navy, not issued to this record. Drawn by Vigil to the geometry the 1992 readoption specifies — white field, blue saltire, band width one tenth of the fly, 2:3. Drawn rather than supplied because this geometry is fully specified; no image file is involved in this record.

State affiliation: Russia.

The smaller square mark is a Vigil category device, drawn from this record’s own domain, echelon and role — not an official insignia.

In brief

The Northern Fleet's marine brigade from the Sputnik garrison in Murmansk oblast, part of the amphibious grouping sent to the Black Sea before the invasion and documented on multiple axes of the land war since.

Broad area of activity
Committed from the Black Sea amphibious grouping of February 2022 to the land war on the northern and eastern axes since. No current disposition is authored.
Notable history
The Arctic marine brigade, based at Sputnik near the Norwegian border and the Northern Fleet's only naval infantry formation, was among the units whose landing ships transited to the Black Sea in the weeks before the invasion, part of the amphibious threat that fixed Ukrainian forces on the Odesa coast in 2022. Like every marine brigade on both sides of this war it was then committed on land, and has been documented on successive axes and reconstituted more than once — the pattern this atlas records across elite-labelled formations.
Strengths
Priority refit as a fleet formation and the cohesion of a single-garrison brigade with a long Arctic identity.
Limitations
Repeated reconstitution dilutes experience; the brigade fights far from the fleet and the direction it exists for; and nothing below the brigade is authored.
