Notable history
Formed in 2014 as a volunteer battalion during the Donbas war and soon absorbed into the National Guard. Its most defining episode was the prolonged 2022 defence of Mariupol, ending in the siege of the Azovstal steelworks. The formation was later reconstituted and expanded to brigade size. It carries a heavily politicised international profile that both sides use for information purposes.
Strengths
Strong unit cohesion and recruitment pull; experienced in urban and defensive fighting.
Limitations
High-profile status draws disproportionate attention; the experienced original core suffered heavy losses at Mariupol.
