Key event

Taiwan fires several weapon families in one exercise, and calls it integration

16 – 18 Sep 2026 Jiupeng range, Pingtung

What happened

Taiwan held a three-day joint precision live-fire exercise at the Jiupeng range in Pingtung county, concluding on 18 September 2026, when President Lai Ching-te attended. The Ministry of National Defense and domestic reporting describe the first participation of multiple types of attack drone in a combined exercise. Systems reported present include the indigenous Hsiung Feng II and III anti-ship missiles, the Tien Kung III surface-to-air missile, Patriot, the Sky Sword II, United States-supplied M142 HIMARS launchers and ALTIUS 600M loitering munitions. A maritime phase used the decommissioned frigate Lan Yang as a target. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense separately reported 28 PLA aircraft sorties around Taiwan on 18 September, 24 of them crossing the median line, with seven navy and two official vessels; no PLA exercise was announced in response by this brief's cutoff.

WHAT WAS DEMONSTRATED IS THAT SEVERAL WEAPON FAMILIES CAN FIRE IN ONE EVENT. THAT IS NOT THE SAME AS A CHAIN, and the module will not let the week's most attractive phrase stand in for evidence. The capability that would matter is a sequence — a sensor holding a track, a command decision taken on it, the track passed across a service boundary in a form another service's shooter can use, and a retasking after assessment — and no reporting read in this cycle described a cross-service data path, a common fire-control picture or a retasking decision. Several systems on one range on one day is co-location, which is the ordinary condition of a national exercise, and the honest description of the new element is narrower and still real: attack drones of more than one type were exercised alongside the missile and rocket forces rather than separately from them, which is a step in the integration of a class of munition Taiwan's own legislature cut funding for in May. The observable this module will keep is documentary — a described data link, a joint fire-control arrangement, or an exercise report that names a retasking — not a photograph of systems in one frame.
