Notable history
Burkina Faso's air force was a handful of transports, helicopters and light aircraft until the war made it something else. Since 2022 it has reorganised around armed unmanned aircraft and light attack: Turkish Bayraktar TB2s from 2022 and heavier Akinci drones reported delivered in 2024, which give the government a strike capability the insurgency cannot answer and which conduct the attacks whose civilian tolls — in markets, at funerals, in villages — are documented by human-rights organisations and disputed by the government. Its other defining task is supply: towns encircled since 2022, Djibo above all, have depended on airlift when convoys could not get through.

The encirclement of Djibo begins
Jihadist forces, primarily Ansarul Islam and JNIM, encircled the Soum provincial capital of Djibo in northern Burkina Faso, destroying infrastructure, mining the roads and ambushing supply convoys. Surrounding populations were forcibly relocated into the town, taking it from about 60,000 inhabitants to between 200,000 and 300,000, and about 370,000 by December 2022. From around May 2022 resupply depended chiefly on humanitarian airlift.
