Notable history
Founded by Iyad Ag Ghaly after the Ifoghas leadership passed him over, Ansar Dine rode the 2012 rebellion alongside the MNLA, then turned on it and imposed jihadist rule on the north. Driven from the cities by Serval, it persisted in the Adrar des Ifoghas and became the senior partner in the 2017 JNIM merger — its leader has run the coalition ever since.

Fought alongside during the January–April 2012 rebellion. By June–July 2012 Ansar Dine and its allies had expelled the MNLA from every northern city it claimed. Connected, never identical projects: a secular Azawad versus religious rule over any territory at all. Dated to the alliance's collapse, not to its start.
