Summary

Niger joined the Alliance of Sahel States at its founding in September 2023, weeks after the July coup that brought the CNSP to power, and the three members made it a confederation in July 2024. Niger's position within it is distinct: Niamey hosts the AES joint command at Base 101, alongside a Russian presence co-located with it, and the July 2026 Niamey consultations that produced a formal Russia–AES framework were held there. That makes Niger the bloc's institutional and diplomatic centre of gravity rather than simply one of three members — a position complicated in August 2026 by an armed mutiny inside the same capital.
