A described arrangement, not a rating. Vigil publishes no measure of how strong, warm or hostile a relationship is, and no relationship on this site carries a score, a trend or a direction of travel. Relationship record

Burkina Faso — Transitional Authorities → Alliance of Sahel States (AES)

Founding membership of a bloc whose common enemies cross its internal borders more fluidly than its own forces do.

Institutional membershipActiveSince 2023-09
In short

Burkina Faso's membership of the Alliance of Sahel States, from the September 2023 mutual-defence charter through the July 2024 confederation. It is the most repressive of the three transitions and presides over the region's largest displacement crisis, inside a bloc that has built institutions faster than security.

Summary

Burkina Faso is a founding member of the Alliance of Sahel States, from the mutual-defence charter of September 2023 through the confederation treaty of July 2024. The confederation's institutional output is real — treaty, rotating presidency, import levy, joint customs duty, investment bank, biometric passport, unified force and consultative parliament — and its security output is not yet observable. For Burkina Faso specifically the gap is sharpest: it presides over the region's largest displacement crisis and its largest armed mobilisation of civilians, and the insurgencies the pact was built against cross the confederation's internal borders daily while each member still fights its own war.

Why it matters

Membership is the whole of Burkina Faso's external institutional position since the ECOWAS exit, which makes the confederation's untested security function a national exposure rather than a regional abstraction.

What remains unknown

  • This module's Burkina Faso lens is a baseline rather than a depth. Country- specific institutional detail beyond the shared confederation record is thin, and this record does not extend past it.
  • No joint operation attributable to the unified force has been independently documented.
  • This module carries no dated event record for the charter or the confederation treaty; both dates come from the AES actor record.
