- Notable history
- Allied Command Operations is the command through which everything the alliance does operationally runs, headed by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. NATO restructured its command arrangements repeatedly after the Cold War; the current structure carries three joint force commands, three component commands, an enabling command and a set of force-support bodies.
- Strengths
- A permanent integrated command structure is the thing that distinguishes NATO from a coalition: the staffs, the procedures and the communications exist before a crisis rather than being assembled during one.
- Limitations
- Almost nothing it directs is its own. The forces remain national until national authorities decide otherwise, and no public source establishes a peacetime transfer of operational command for any eastern-flank formation. The regional defence plans that would govern a real defence are classified, and NATO publishes no mapping of joint force commands to plan areas.
