The NATO Force Model replaces the NATO Response Force — Key Events — NATO Eastern Flank

What happened

The transition to the NATO Force Model is completed on 1 July 2024, fully replacing the NATO Response Force, which had run since it was announced at the 2002 Prague Summit and reached initial operational capability in October 2004. NATO describes the Force Model as providing a larger pool of high-readiness forces that can be pre-assigned to specific plans for the defence of Allies. The Allied Reaction Force, agreed at Vilnius, launches on the same date.

This is the readiness architecture the module's current period runs on, and the transition matters more than either end of it: forces pre-assigned to regional plans are a different arrangement from a rotational reaction force, and it is what makes reinforcement capacity rather than force generation the binding constraint. It is also a live currentness trap — NATO's own maritime pages still describe standing forces as part of the NRF.
