- Slovakia, on NATO territory. The formation operates in concert with national home defence forces and is present at all times in the host nation.
- Notable history
- NATO deployed multinational battlegroups to the eastern flank after 2014 and expanded the set after February 2022. In 2022 Allies agreed to scale them up to brigade size "when and where required" — and NATO notes that the formations are called multinational battlegroups regardless of size or organisational structure, which is why a scale change does not produce a name change.
- Strengths
- Multinational composition is the capability that matters most here: a formation manned by several allies makes an attack on it an attack on all of them in the most literal sense available short of Article 5 itself.
- Limitations
- Provided on a voluntary, fully sustainable and rotational basis. Continuity is therefore a standing national decision by each contributing ally rather than a fixed alliance asset, and NATO publishes no troop numbers, composition or readiness for any of the nine.

Key events
Four more battlegroups are agreed at the extraordinary Brussels Summit
Allied Heads of State and Government agree to establish four further multinational battlegroups, in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. With the reinforcement of the existing four in the north-east, NATO describes the decision as extending forward presence along the whole eastern flank from the Baltic to the Black Sea and effectively doubling the number of troops on the ground.
