Four more battlegroups are agreed at the extraordinary Brussels Summit — Key Events — NATO Eastern Flank

What happened

Allied Heads of State and Government agree to establish four further multinational battlegroups, in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. With the reinforcement of the existing four in the north-east, NATO describes the decision as extending forward presence along the whole eastern flank from the Baltic to the Black Sea and effectively doubling the number of troops on the ground.

This is the decision that made the eastern flank a single continuous system rather than two regional arrangements, and it is why this module exists as one module. Four of its nine forward formations, and the central-flank and Black Sea arenas as force-hosting geographies, date from this day.
