Notable history

The mine threat is the oldest of the Gulf's maritime problems — the Tanker War of the 1980s mined the Gulf and damaged American warships — and Task Force 52 is the standing answer: the mine-countermeasures ships, helicopters and, increasingly, unmanned systems that the Fifth Fleet keeps at Bahrain for the day the strait is mined. That day has not come. Iran has never physically closed the strait, and the usable state of the water in 2026 has been set by commercial risk rather than by mines; but the existence of a mining capability on one side and a clearance capability on the other is exactly what makes the risk priceable, which is why the task force matters to a module about an energy system.

Strengths

A standing, specialised force on the spot, with allied contributions — British mine-countermeasures vessels have been based at Bahrain for years — and a transition under way to unmanned clearance systems.

Limitations

Slow, deliberate work whose vessels are themselves vulnerable, against a threat whose scale is unknown until it is used. No hulls, dispositions or operations are recorded.
