Notable history

The National Guard descends from the tribal levies of the kingdom's founding and has never been folded into the regular military. It has its own ministry, its own chain of command to the King, its own recruitment base in the tribes and its own training relationship with the United States. The purpose of the arrangement is not obscure: two armed forces that do not command each other are a check on both, and the design has outlasted every reorganisation of the Saudi state. For this module the Guard matters because it is the clearest example in the Gulf of a parallel-force structure — the same organisational logic that Iran runs at much larger scale — and because flattening it into the armed forces would misdescribe both.

Strengths

Institutional loyalty by design, a recruitment base that ties it to the tribal structure of the country, and a long-running foreign training relationship. It gives the state an internal-security instrument that does not depend on the regular military.

Limitations

Duplication is the price: two ministries, two logistics systems and two officer corps for one country. It is a land force with an internal orientation and has no role in the air and maritime problems this module is about, which is why the record is deliberately shallow. Nothing here describes its structure below the institutional level, its strength, its deployments or its equipment.
