Notable history
Iran's missile force was built inside the Revolutionary Guard from the war with Iraq onward, and when the Guard's air arm became the Aerospace Force in 2009 the missile organisation became its core. Compiled accounts describe it as organised into missile brigades and groups under a missile command, and describe the Aerospace Force's commander and the commander of its missile component among those killed in the Israeli strike of 13 June 2025. The force carried out the retaliation of the twelve-day war and the launches of the 2026 war — more than six thousand seven hundred drones and missiles at the Gulf states alone between February and May, a figure that counts launches and not effects.
Strengths
The one capability that lets Iran reach every opponent it has, in numbers that force expensive defences to be used. Its continued firing after two decapitation strikes indicates authority delegated well below the top.
Limitations
Its production base has been struck repeatedly and United States officials claim much of it destroyed — a claim carried as made. What arrived, as against what left the ground, is not established from open sources. This record contains no units by name, no bases, no launch sites, no inventory, no ranges and no targeting.

United States and Israeli strikes on Iran open the war
A large-scale United States and Israeli strike campaign against Iran begins. The Congressional Research Service records more than ten thousand targets struck in Iran by 25 March, and reports the operation's cost as exceeding $11.3bn in its first six days — a figure it notes excludes many associated costs. Iranian retaliation against Israel, United States facilities and Gulf states begins the same day.
