The United States President declares the memorandum over

7 Jul 2026Key event

DiplomaticMaritime

Following attacks on commercial vessels — including the Ever Lovely on 25 June, which Washington attributed to Iran — and United States retaliatory strikes on Iranian coastal facilities on 27 June, the United States President declares the memorandum over on 7 July. Commercial access to the strait degrades again.

Why it mattersThe memorandum collapsed six weeks before it formally expired. Recording the collapse and the expiry as separate events is what keeps the chronology honest: an arrangement that stopped operating in July and lapsed in August did two different things.
