A Saudi-led multinational maritime defence alliance is declared in Riyadh — Key Events — Iran–Gulf

What happened

Founding states sign a declaration in Riyadh establishing a Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance, with the stated purpose of keeping the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden open to international traffic. The Saudi Ministry of Defense had hosted chiefs of staff and representatives of 43 countries and the EU delegation, of 51 invited. On 6 August the ministry names Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Alshehri as the coalition's commander.

A SEPARATE ARRANGEMENT FROM THE MAKKAH AGREEMENT, declared eight days before it, with a different membership, a different geography and a named commander. Türkiye and Pakistan belong to both. The module authors the two apart because collapsing them would attribute maritime activity to a collective-defence agreement that has not been shown to have ordered any.
