此地形是什麼
Taiwan occupies the centre of an island arc running from Japan to the Philippines, whose narrow channels connect the East and South China Seas to the open Pacific. That position is why states with no view on sovereignty treat the strait as their own security question.

移動集中之處
The principal southern connection between the South China Sea and the Pacific, and a heavily used commercial and cable corridor.
The wider southern gap between Taiwan and the Philippines through which routine transits are reported.
The principal northern channel, between Japanese islands, and the transit most consistently reported by Japan's defence ministry.
The northern approaches as a whole, where this module's geography meets Japan's own security file.
The open ocean beyond the arc — the space that external access to Taiwan would have to cross, and the reason the eastern approaches matter.
自然特徵
- 主要地形
- An arc of islands with navigable gaps at intervals — the Miyako Strait and the East China Sea approaches to the north, the Bashi Channel and Luzon Strait to the south. The arc separates semi-enclosed seas from the open Pacific, and the channels are the connections between them. Taiwan sits at the arc's hinge, which is a geographic fact rather than a claim about anyone's intentions.
- 機動意涵
- For maritime and air movement between the marginal seas and the Pacific, the channels are the available routes. They are international waters and airspace and are used as such continuously by commercial and military traffic of many states. The relevant point for this module is structural rather than tactical: a small number of wide gaps in a long arc concentrates attention on them, and that is why activity through the Miyako Strait or the Bashi Channel is routinely reported when equivalent movement in open ocean is not.
- 季節性制約
- The same monsoon and typhoon cycle as the strait, with the southern channels exposed to Pacific weather systems earlier. Its relevance here is to shipping reliability and to the predictability of routine transits rather than to anything else.
- 水域與天然屏障
- The islands are the barrier and the channels are the openings. The Bashi Channel and Luzon Strait to the south are the principal connections between the South China Sea and the Pacific and carry heavy commercial traffic; the Miyako Strait and the East China Sea approaches perform the same function in the north. Undersea cable routes follow broadly similar corridors, which is why the cable incidents recorded in this module are a geography question as well as an infrastructure one.
- 城市化與聚落
- Sparse across the arc itself — the Japanese south-west islands and the northern Philippine islands are lightly populated — with dense population at the arc's two ends and at its Taiwanese centre. The lightly populated middle is why regional basing geography is a live political question in Japan and the Philippines rather than a settled one.
廣泛的作戰意義
Two effects. First, the arc is why this dispute has regional participants at all: Japan and the Philippines are not choosing to be involved, their territory is the geography. Second, because the channels are international waters carrying very large commercial volumes, activity in them is simultaneously a military signal, a legal statement about freedom of navigation, and an economic fact — the three cannot be separated, and treating a transit as only one of them misreads it.
已觀察
Naval and air transits through the Miyako Strait and the Bashi Channel are reported routinely by Japanese and Taiwanese authorities. Undersea cable damage in 2023 and 2025 raised civil-infrastructure questions along these corridors, with attribution contested in both cases. Regional basing and access arrangements involving Japan and the Philippines have been publicly discussed and adjusted through the period this module covers.
經評估
The island chain is usually described as a barrier, which is a framing borrowed from a different era. Its live function in this dispute is as a political fact: it distributes the consequences of a Taiwan contingency across several sovereign states, which is what makes deterrence here a multilateral problem rather than a bilateral one.

仍然未知的事項
- Transit reporting differs between Japanese and Taiwanese sources in counting method and threshold, so figures are not directly comparable.
- Cable-damage attribution has not been established in any of the recorded incidents; this module records the contest rather than resolving it.
- Regional basing arrangements are partly public and partly not; this record describes only what has been published.
據報經由北部與南部航道的通過
Japan and Taiwan both publish. Frequency and composition are the observable trend; single transits are routine and are not signals.
區域基地與進出安排
Japanese and Philippine domestic politics govern these, and they move on their own timetable rather than on the strait's.
