- An arc of islands with navigable gaps at intervals — the Miyako Strait and the East China Sea approaches to the north, the Bashi Channel and Luzon Strait to the south. The arc separates semi-enclosed seas from the open Pacific, and the channels are the connections between them. Taiwan sits at the arc's hinge, which is a geographic fact rather than a claim about anyone's intentions.

- For maritime and air movement between the marginal seas and the Pacific, the channels are the available routes. They are international waters and airspace and are used as such continuously by commercial and military traffic of many states. The relevant point for this module is structural rather than tactical: a small number of wide gaps in a long arc concentrates attention on them, and that is why activity through the Miyako Strait or the Bashi Channel is routinely reported when equivalent movement in open ocean is not.

The lightly populated middle is why regional basing geography is a live political question in Japan and the Philippines rather than a settled one.

Two effects. First, the arc is why this dispute has regional participants at all: Japan and the Philippines are not choosing to be involved, their territory is the geography. Second, because the channels are international waters carrying very large commercial volumes, activity in them is simultaneously a military signal, a legal statement about freedom of navigation, and an economic fact — the three cannot be separated, and treating a transit as only one of them misreads it.

Naval and air transits through the Miyako Strait and the Bashi Channel are reported routinely by Japanese and Taiwanese authorities. Undersea cable damage in 2023 and 2025 raised civil-infrastructure questions along these corridors, with attribution contested in both cases. Regional basing and access arrangements involving Japan and the Philippines have been publicly discussed and adjusted through the period this module covers.
