Nature de ce terrain
The hills and valleys between the Blue Line, a UN withdrawal line rather than a border, and the Litani river, the line Resolution 1701 and the 2024 cessation use for the arms-free area. Village-studded high ground overlooks both sides, which is why the frontier has been held by presence, not lines.

Caractère physique
- Terrain dominant
- Limestone hills and ridges cut by steep wadis, rising from a narrow coastal plain around Tyre and Naqoura toward the Hermon foothills in the east. The land is a patchwork of hilltop villages, terraced cultivation, orchards and scrub. The Litani runs south through the Bekaa, then turns west in a deep gorge to reach the sea north of Tyre.
- Implications pour la mobilité
- The ground is compartmentalised: ridges and wadis break it into small sections, and the hilltop villages and high points give observation over the valleys and across the Blue Line in both directions. That is the terrain half of why the frontier has been contested through presence on high ground — the five positions Israel kept in 2025, and the much larger area inside the forward defence line since 2026 — rather than across open country.
- Contraintes saisonnières
- Wet winters with snow on the eastern heights, and long, dry summers, when scrub and orchards are dry. The tobacco and olive seasons structure the rural economy of the border villages.
- Eau et obstacles naturels
- The Litani is the region's main river and its political reference line: the area between it and the Blue Line is the arms-free area of Resolution 1701, the 2024 cessation's obligation starts there, and the Lebanese cabinet's 2026 decisions and the 3 June 2026 joint statement refer to the South Litani Sector. The 26 June 2026 Trilateral Framework does not mention the Litani. The Blue Line itself is the line the UN identified in 2000 to confirm Israel's withdrawal; it is not an international border, Lebanon has registered reservations on 13 points along it, and the Shebaa Farms and northern Ghajar remain disputed or occupied.
- Urbanisation et peuplement
- Dense village settlement rather than cities, with Tyre and Nabatieh as the regional centres. Villages on both sides of the Blue Line were emptied in the 2023–2024 fighting and again in 2026; according to the UN Secretary-General, the IDF's 19 April 2026 map enclosed some 55 Lebanese villages, to which residents may not return.
Portée opérationnelle générale
Southern Lebanon explains why every instrument on this front since 1978 has been about who may be present between two lines rather than where a border runs. The ground favours whoever holds the high points, so withdrawal has always been negotiated as a sequence matched against someone else's deployment — UNIFIL in 1978 and 2006, the Lebanese army under the 2024 cessation, pilot zones under the 2026 Framework. With UNIFIL ending operations on 31 December 2026, the question for this ground is which presence, if any, replaces the international one.
Observé
Since April 2026 Israel has held an area up to 10 km north of the Blue Line, including some territory north of the Litani, according to the UN Secretary-General, and the Lebanese army has deployed into the first pilot zones after Israeli withdrawal from them in July 2026.
Évalué
The terrain rewards presence over manoeuvre, which is why the dispute has settled into questions of verification and sequencing; the instruments differ mainly in who verifies and in what order presence changes hands.

Ce qui reste inconnu
- The forward defence line has no published, agreed geometry; the module carries only the UN's description of the IDF maps and never draws it.
- The Blue Line's disputed points are not mapped by this module.
