Houthi attacks on Israel-linked shipping in the Red Sea from November 2023 drove ships away from Eilat: activity fell about 85% within weeks, revenue by about 80% in 2024, and the port halted in July 2025. Israel's trade now rests on Haifa and Ashdod, both within range of fire.

The Houthi campaign against Red Sea shipping, 2023–2025 »
- Actif, itinéraire ou région touchésConfirmé
Eilat is Israel's only Red Sea port, at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba, reached from the Indian Ocean only through Bab el-Mandeb. Before the war it handled about half of Israel's car imports, and more than 134 ships and about 150,000 vehicles called in 2023, on figures reported by Globes.

- Perturbation opérationnelleConfirmé
From November 2023, when the Houthi movement began attacking shipping it linked to Israel (the campaign is recorded in the Iran–Gulf module), shipping avoided Eilat. The port's chief executive reported an 85% drop in activity by December 2023, and management planned to lay off 60 of its 120 staff in early 2024, as Reuters reported. War-risk insurance on calls at Israeli ports rose above 2% of hull value at the November 2023 peak, on brokers' figures.

- Secteur ou produit exposéConfirmé
The port's business collapsed: 16 ships and no vehicles in 2024, 6 ships in the first half of 2025, and revenue down from NIS 212 million in 2023 to NIS 42 million in 2024, on port and Knesset Finance Committee data as Globes reported. Commercial operations halted on 20 July 2025 after the municipality froze the port's accounts, and no resumption was found in 2026. The car imports Eilat once landed arrive instead through Haifa and Ashdod.

- Portée économique plus largeExposition plausible
With about 99% of import and export cargo by tonnage moving by sea, and the Red Sea outlet dormant, Israeli seaborne trade is concentrated on two Mediterranean port areas, Haifa and Ashdod, that are exposed to fire from Lebanon and Iran. This is Vigil's assessment: neither port has closed, and Haifa reported normal operations after the March 2026 strikes, so the exposure is a loss of redundancy rather than an interruption.
- No Israel-specific measurement of cargo diverted from Eilat to the Mediterranean ports was found; the shift of car imports is inferred from Eilat's collapse and its pre-war share.
- The 2023–25 Houthi campaign is recorded in the Iran–Gulf module. The chain names it in prose rather than as a linked event, because a chain's trigger and step events can only reference events in the chain's own module.
Lectures que les éléments permettent aussi
- The 2025 halt was financial — a municipal account freeze over unpaid taxes — so the chain explains why the port emptied, not the exact form of its closure.
Whether regular commercial calls, above all car carriers, resume, or a new concession is awarded.
Risque en mer Rouge
Whether Red Sea shipping risk recorded in the Iran–Gulf module falls far enough for Israel-linked shipping to return.
