Gaza's water production runs on imported inputs: diesel, one 4 MW Israeli feeder, three Mekorot lines and approved parts and chemicals. With those restricted, desalination output reached its lowest recorded level in October 2026. That water capacity is set by approvals is graded plausible, not documented.

    Condition permanente

  2. Zone ou système touchéConfirmé

Gaza's water comes from seawater desalination, from wells on the coastal aquifer and from bulk lines from Israel's Mekorot. Before the war (World Bank–EU–UN assessment, historical) three short-term low-volume plants and three Mekorot bulk connections were part of that supply. Every part of it now runs on imported inputs: the desalination plants on electricity or diesel, the wells on generators and fuel (UNICEF), and the Mekorot lines on Israeli deliveries.

  3. Perturbation de l’accès ou des servicesConfirmé

Those inputs are restricted. The power plant has been shut since October 2023 and its resumption was a pending approval on 23 September 2026 (OCHA). The only operating Israeli line is the 4 MW Kissufim feeder, which supplies one desalination plant (World Bank, May 2026); when its cable connectors were damaged on 25 March 2026 the plant ran on diesel at under 20% of output for days (UNICEF). OCHA called the 550,000 litres of fuel allowed in on 22 September "far from sufficient", reported engine oil approved far below requests, and lists spare parts, electro-mechanical equipment, generators and chlorine as restricted.

  4. Situation des civilsConfirmé

Production falls. UNICEF, citing the WASH Cluster, reported seawater desalination output of 20,000 cubic metres a day in March 2026 falling to 16,000 by May for lack of chemicals and spare parts. On 25 September OCHA reported the Al Basa plant in Deir al-Balah reduced by a brine-pump failure and generator overuse, and three Mekorot lines delivering about 40% below contracted quantities, which it attributed to marine algae affecting Israeli desalination. On 2 October OCHA reported the two southern seawater plants at their lowest recorded output.

  5. Portée humanitaire plus largeExposition plausible

Vigil's reading is that Gaza's water-production capacity is now set less by its plants than by approvals over inputs — Israeli decisions on fuel, oil, parts and the power plant, and the UN facilitation that moves them — so a change in those approvals would show up in production before any repair at a site. Graded plausible: the sources document each restriction and the falling output, but none separates the share of the shortfall caused by inputs from damage, wear or the Mekorot algae episode. What the capacity means for people's access to water is recorded in the module's water and health records.

Conditions civiles touchées

Seawater desalination outputBulk water deliveries from IsraelGenerator-dependent well and pumping capacity

  • No continuous desalination-output series exists after May 2026; the October reading is OCHA's "lowest recorded", without a figure.
  • The names of the southern plants differ across sources, so plant-level output cannot be attributed with confidence.
  • Well output and the fuel each water facility receives are not published.

Lectures que les éléments permettent aussi

  • Falling output could be driven mainly by plant wear and equipment failure rather than input approvals; OCHA's Al Basa report points to a brine-pump failure and generator overuse, which input restrictions may compound but do not by themselves explain.

OCHA or WASH Cluster reporting that southern desalination has recovered from its lowest recorded output, and whether the recovery follows an input approval.

A dated approval of the power plant's resumption, or any Israeli line beyond the single Kissufim feeder, stated by OCHA, the World Bank or COGAT.
