In brief

The Kryvyi Rih tank brigade, one of Ukraine's small number of dedicated tank formations, reorganised in late October 2024 as the Ground Forces' first heavy mechanized brigade after its tank battalions had spent 2022–24 dispersed among mechanized brigades. No corps assignment is published.

Broad area of activity
Its battalions have been publicly documented across the southern and eastern fronts attached to other brigades; no current disposition is authored.
Notable history
A formation with a 1940 lineage and a Kryvyi Rih garrison, it was in the middle of a reorganisation when the Donbas war began in 2014 and was filled that autumn largely with volunteers from territorial battalions. In the full-scale war its tank battalions were parcelled out to newly formed mechanized brigades, so that the brigade rarely fought as one; the reorganisation of late October 2024 into the Ground Forces' first heavy mechanized brigade — infantry added to the armour — was in part an attempt to restore a formation that had become a pool of battalions.
Strengths
A concentration of armour and tank expertise rare in a force that has spread its tanks thinly, and a heavy establishment suited to the positional war.
Limitations
Years of fighting as detached battalions cost it cohesion; tank-heavy formations are the ones drone saturation punishes most; and the reorganisation's completeness is not published.

Reported & historical equipment associations
