Identity provenance
Service ensign: St Andrew's ensign — naval ensign of the Russian Federation — carried by Navy, not issued to this record. Drawn by Vigil to the geometry the 1992 readoption specifies — white field, blue saltire, band width one tenth of the fly, 2:3. Drawn rather than supplied because this geometry is fully specified; no image file is involved in this record.
State affiliation: Russia.
The smaller square mark is a Vigil category device, drawn from this record’s own domain, echelon and role — not an official insignia.
In brief
The fleet air arms — maritime patrol, anti-ship strike and shipborne helicopter forces organised per fleet; in this war the Black Sea Fleet's arm, whose Crimean airfields were struck from August 2022 and whose fighter regiment's losses have been independently counted.

- Broad area of activity
- Each fleet's air arm operates from its own coastal airfields; the Black Sea Fleet's from Crimea, the others in the Arctic, the Baltic and the Pacific outside this war's theatre. No current basing is authored.
- Notable history
- Naval aviation survived the post-Soviet contraction as a per-fleet structure — maritime patrol aircraft, a strike and fighter component, and shipborne helicopters — that was never large and was slowly re-equipped with Su-30SM multirole fighters in the 2010s. Its war has been the Black Sea Fleet's: fighters and bombers flying from occupied Crimea against Ukraine's coast and the Snake Island approaches, and then the reversal — the August 2022 strike on the Saky airfield that UK Defence Intelligence assessed had significantly degraded the fleet's aviation, and a fighter regiment whose losses over three years were counted publicly at more than half its pre-war Su-30SM strength.
- Strengths
- Multirole fighters and helicopters that give a fleet its own air cover and maritime search without depending on the Aerospace Forces, and an Arctic and Pacific arm untouched by the war.
- Limitations
- Small numbers per fleet, so documented losses matter structurally; a basing set in Crimea within reach of Ukrainian strike since 2022; and a patrol fleet of Soviet-era airframes with no replacement in production. Nothing below the branch is authored.
Reported & historical equipment associations
Sukhoi Su-30SM: The Black Sea Fleet's fighter regiment is publicly reported on the Su-30SM; the edge records the association at branch level and claims no allocation and no quantity.
