What happened

Government defences dissolve and factions enter Damascus without a battle; Bashar al-Assad flees to Moscow, ending 54 years of Assad family rule. Sednaya prison is opened, crowds search the security archives, and Ahmed al-Sharaa — the HTS leader once listed as a terrorist under the name al-Jolani — emerges as the transition's central figure. Israel begins a large strike campaign against former state military assets and moves forces into the Golan buffer zone.
