In brief
The territorial layer of the Malian army — numbered military regions seated at the garrison towns that have been the war's fixed points, Gao and Timbuktu and Sévaré among them, and the structure through which the isolated garrisons of the north and centre are commanded; their count and numbering are not consistently published, and this record stands for the class.

Broad area of activity
Nationwide by region, with the seats at Gao, Kati, Kayes, Timbuktu, Sévaré and Sikasso attested consistently and a Kidal region created in 2013 whose seat the army has not held since April 2026.
Notable history
The Malian army is territorial before it is anything else: a set of numbered military regions, each seated at a garrison town and commanding the posts and camps in its area, on the French colonial pattern the country inherited. The regions are the structure through which the war's fixed points are held — Gao, the northern seat that the 2026 offensives struck and did not take; Sévaré, the central seat beside Mopti; Timbuktu, besieged in 2023; Kayes in the west, where the insurgency arrived in 2025; Kati, the garrison beside Bamako from which the 2012, 2020 and 2021 coups were launched — and the region created for Kidal in 2013 lost its seat when the army withdrew from the town in April 2026. Compiled references give six or eight regions and number them differently; this record names the seats that recur and adopts no numbering.
Strengths
A territorial structure that keeps the state present in regional capitals the insurgency cannot take against air power, and garrison towns that have held through a decade of siege.
Limitations
The same structure is the war's vulnerability: isolated garrisons dependent on convoys along corridors under interdiction, regional seats that have had to be supplied by air, and a northern region whose seat is now held by the separatist front. Count, numbering, strength and dispositions are not published here.

Key events
April 2026 offensive — Kidal falls, the defence minister is killed
The FLA and JNIM launch the war's largest coordinated offensive since 2012, reported as the first time the two openly coordinated operations: the FLA takes Kidal as government and Russian forces withdraw from the far north, reportedly under negotiated terms, and a car bombing at Kati kills Defence Minister Sadio Camara. The withdrawals extend well beyond Kidal — Africa Corps is reported to have left Aguelhok and Tessalit on 27 April, Malian troops to have left Tessit in the Gao region, and Ber in the Tombouctou region to have been given up under negotiation. IS-Sahel joins on 28 April, occupies the vacated Labbezanga border post and briefly enters Ménaka town before withdrawing under reported Russian pressure. JNIM reimposes a full blockade of Bamako on 28 April, claims wide gains around Mopti, and reportedly follows with checkpoints on the capital's approaches.
