Notable history
The rapid-intervention battalion is the Burkinabè army's answer to the problem of a light insurgency that moves faster than a garrison force: units with better vehicles, weapons and training than the line battalions, charged, in the government's own words, to intervene as quickly and as far forward as possible with mobility and firepower. The first six were created in 2022 and the leadership announced new ones in batches — the March 2025 creation brought the total to twenty-eight — alongside the mass mobilisation of the volunteer auxiliaries. Their operations are the ones the government's "total war" is conducted through, and they are also the units whose convoys and operations carry the conduct record that human-rights organisations document. No individual battalion is authored, and their numbers, seats and assignments are not published here.
Strengths
Mobility and firepower concentrated in the units that actually pursue, and a reorganisation that put the army's best resources where the war is.
Limitations
Twenty-eight battalions raised in three years is a rate that outruns training, and a mobile force still depends on the corridors and convoys the insurgency interdicts. Conduct is documented as a driver of grievance. No strength, seats or dispositions are published.
