Summary

Algeria borders Mali for roughly 1,300 kilometres and brokered every peace agreement in Mali's modern history, including the 2015 Algiers Accord that Bamako terminated in January 2024. Relations ruptured in April 2025 over the Tinzaouatène drone incident and remained broken for fifteen months, with ambassadors withdrawn and airspace closed on both sides. They were restored in July 2026, and the Malian prime minister visited Algiers on 25–26 August 2026 — the highest-level contact since the rupture. The relationship therefore runs through a border neither state can ignore, a mediation record Bamako has repudiated, and a restored channel whose content has not yet been demonstrated.

Why it matters

Algeria is the one external actor with both the border and the standing to affect Mali's northern file, and the only regional power whose mediation Bamako has previously accepted. The restoration matters less for what it has produced than for what it reopens: a channel to the north that was closed through the whole of the 2025–26 offensive period.
