The camp at Dioura is overrun, and is not re-established

What happened

JNIM attacks the Malian army camp at Dioura, in the Ténenkou cercle of the Mopti region, and claims total control of the barracks. Security, military and local sources give AFP a rising toll over eight days — first more than fifty soldiers and five Africa Corps personnel, then sixty to eighty, then more than a hundred including two officers, with between sixty and ninety taken prisoner; JNIM claims 150 killed and 93 captured. The Malian authorities announce air-ground operations against the attackers and publish no toll of their own. Local sources say the attackers returned the following day, that no reinforcements were sent, that the camp was emptied of its weaponry, and that it remained abandoned eight days later.

The heaviest single loss recorded in this module, and the clearest case of a distinct mechanism: a position that ends not because it was held by someone else but because it was not put back. Dioura's camp had already been raided in 2019, overrun in 2023 and taken and looted in May 2025, and each time the attackers left. What separates 2026 is the aftermath rather than the assault.
